Today is National Pet Fire Safety Day, so we’re taking the opportunity to share some tips about protecting your furry friends. Your New Hampshire home insurance will cover damage and loss in the event of a fire, but you still want to keep your pets safe. Fire hazards are present year-round, but there are even more in the summertime. From fireworks and campfires to travel plans, there are plenty of opportunities for your pets to endanger themselves or your home around fires.
Stay safe this summer with these tips for protecting your pets and your home from fire hazards.
Quick Safety Tips
- Extinguish open flames. Although candles may provide a pleasant scent and ambiance, your pets can easily knock them over. Instead, use battery-powered LED candles for the ambiance and a diffuser or candle warmer for the scent.
- Take the knobs off the stove. If your dog is tall enough to bump the knobs or your stove, they can accidentally turn it on. That’s dangerous, whether you have a gas or electric stove.
- Use metal or plastic water bowls instead of glass outside. Not only can glass bowls break, but direct sunlight through glass can start a fire.
- Watch your pets around grills and campfires. We all love a summer cookout, but our pets don’t understand the danger of cooking over open flames. If you have a grill or take your dog camping, keep an eye on them while the fire is lit.
When You’re Away
Most of us take at least one trip over the summer, but we can’t always take our pets with us. If your pets aren’t coming with you on vacation, take steps to keep them safe while you’re away. For active pets like dogs, arrange for someone to stay with them or send them to a kennel or a relative’s house so they’re not alone for extended periods. If you leave your pets alone while you’re at work or running errands, keep them in a single, pet-proof room. Place fire alert window clings in that room so firefighters know where your pets are and can rescue them in an emergency.
Emergency Preparedness
You should already have an evacuation plan in place in case of a fire or gas leak in your home, so make sure your pets are included in it. If you have more than one pet, designate family members to be responsible for each pet. You don’t want to accidentally leave your pet inside because everyone thought someone else was getting them.
